Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Wedding Celebrant Services in New Zealand
General Questions
What does a wedding celebrant do?
A wedding celebrant is responsible for legally officiating your marriage and creating a ceremony that reflects your personalities, values, and relationship. Your celebrant will guide you through the legal requirements, help design your ceremony, and conduct the wedding on the day.
Why choose an independent celebrant instead of a registry wedding?
An independent celebrant allows you to personalise every aspect of your ceremony. You can choose your location, write your own vows, include cultural traditions, involve family and friends, and create a unique experience that reflects your love story.
Are you a registered marriage celebrant in New Zealand?
Yes, I am an authorised marriage celebrant registered with the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs and legally permitted to solemnise marriages throughout New Zealand.
Where do you perform wedding ceremonies?
I can officiate weddings throughout New Zealand. Whether you're planning a beach wedding, garden ceremony, vineyard celebration, private residence wedding, or destination elopement, I can travel to your chosen location.
Booking & Planning
How far in advance should we book?
Most couples book between 6 and 18 months before their wedding date. Popular dates, especially during summer and holiday weekends, can book out well in advance, so early booking is recommended.
How do we secure our date?
A signed agreement and booking fee are typically required to confirm your wedding date.
Can we meet before booking?
Absolutely. An initial consultation allows us to get to know each other, discuss your vision, and ensure we're a good fit before you make a commitment.
Do you help us write our vows?
Yes. I provide guidance, examples, and tips to help you create meaningful vows that feel authentic and personal.
Can we include cultural, religious, or family traditions?
Of course. Your ceremony can incorporate cultural customs, symbolic rituals, religious elements, family involvement, readings, music, or anything else that is important to you.
Legal Requirements
What paperwork is required to get married in New Zealand?
Before your wedding, you'll need to apply for a Marriage Licence through Births, Deaths and Marriages. The licence must be issued before your ceremony can legally take place.
How long is a Marriage Licence valid for?
A New Zealand Marriage Licence is valid for three months from the date it is issued.
Do we need witnesses?
Yes. New Zealand law requires two witnesses to be present during the ceremony.
Can overseas visitors get married in New Zealand?
Yes. International couples can legally marry in New Zealand. You'll still need to obtain a New Zealand Marriage Licence before the ceremony.
Do we need to exchange rings?
No. Rings are a traditional part of many ceremonies but are not legally required for marriage in New Zealand.
Ceremony Questions
How long does a wedding ceremony usually last?
Most ceremonies last between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the level of personalisation, readings, music, and special elements included.
Can we write our own vows?
Absolutely. Personal vows often become one of the most memorable parts of the ceremony.
Can family members or friends participate?
Yes. Many couples choose to involve loved ones through readings, speeches, cultural rituals, musical performances, or witness roles.
Can we have a rehearsal?
Yes. A rehearsal can help everyone feel comfortable and confident about the ceremony flow and timing.
What happens if it rains?
We'll discuss a wet-weather backup plan during the planning process. Being prepared helps ensure a smooth and stress-free experience regardless of the weather.
Elopements & Small Weddings
Do you perform elopements?
Yes. Elopements are a wonderful option for couples seeking an intimate and meaningful ceremony without a large guest list.
Can you officiate a ceremony with just a few guests?
Absolutely. Whether you have two guests or two hundred, the ceremony can be tailored to suit your vision.
Can you help with last-minute weddings?
Depending on availability, yes. Contact me to discuss your date and requirements.
